Turning Your Dog Into a Good Environmental Citizen
6 Comments Published by Seamus Ford December 21st, 2008 in Education, Recycling, landscaping. Our dogs and cats are our companions and we naturally want to take care of them. If you are a pet owner you probably give a lot of thought to what you feed your pet. What you probably don’t think about is what happens to the waste they generate once you dispose of it. Most people put dog waste into a plastic bag that is then thrown into the garbage. When it is all added up more than 10 million tons of animal waste goes into landfills each year. Since most of it is wrapped in plastic, it never really biodegrades. This video is about a possible alternative to sending your pet waste to the landfill: A dog waste composter.

How is this working out? I have three sporting dogs as well and am interested in how this has been working as I definitely will install next to my own compost bin if it is a workable solution.
It is working out well, except that it filled up faster than I anticipated. Because you have to add so much vegitation to the pile it goes faster. The next one I dig will be much deeper, like out house depth.
This video was really interesting. I work for a company that sells biodegradable plastic bags for picking up dog poop. They fall under the ASTM D6400 -04 Standard Specification for Compostable Plastics- basically they break down within a year.
How do you think the compost would work if you used one of those bags on occasion instead of regular, supermarket plastic bags?

Is this method possible in a city garden where it’s not possible to dig down into the earth? and Can you use the resulting material as compost? Thanks
Dog waste cannot be used for food garden compost. It contains too much meat.
