Get Your Local Grocer to Get in the 100 mile Diet Game
Published by Seamus Ford October 28th, 2007 in Social Responsibility.Ask your local grocer to create a 100 mile diet section
In an earlier article, we talked about adopting a 100 mile diet. It was about adjusting your food purchases to buy locally and reduce the energy used on transportation and packaging. While you as an individual can take care of yourself, your local grocer can have an even bigger impact.
The next time you go to your local grocery store go to the customer service desk and put a request for the store to organize a local food section. Any local grocery store could do this over night without having to change a single item of their inventory.
There are several benefits that you can point out to the store in making this suggestion:
1) The store gets to express it’s environmental consciousness and bringing attention to the issue with their customers.
2) Creating a 100 mile diet section would probably make it quite easy for the store to get local press coverage and positive PR.
3) It will make it easier for people to adhere to a 100 mile diet approach and the store gets immediate customer feedback.
If you and 6 other neighbors took the time to make the request of your local store, they would pay attention. Take a few minutes to do this next time you are at the store and see what difference it can make. Come back and let us know how it went.
